Uitenhage weekend crime blitz nets 80 for various crimes

Police officers in the Uitenhage Cluster, outside Port Elizabeth, made more than 80 arrests over the past weekend, from Friday until the early hours of Monday morning.

"Members also issued 24 traffic fines valued at about R2 400 for various traffic violations.

"Arrests made vary from the illegal possession of drugs, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, driving under the influence of liquor, robbery, attempted murder, rape, stock theft, etc," Eastern Cape police said in a statement. 

"Additional crime prevention operations were conducted in the various station areas in the Uitenhage Cluster in an attempt to reduce crime drastically."

According to the statement, police will continue with their efforts to swiftly and effectively fight crime in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"The string of arrests made by police are proof that police officers are committed to ensure the safety of all people in South Africa.  This also shows that the members are dedicated to do their work and are working proactively," the police said.
