Unforgettable romantic stay at Teniqua Treetops

Every passionate traveller will probably agree that the best part of escaping into the countryside is the amazing feeling of discovering new and incredible experiences. That’s exactly what happened when my husband, Andre, and I literally stayed high up in the trees at the magical Teniqua Treetops.

A unique vacation concept, Teniqua Treetops is an eco-friendly, self-catering, tented treehouse resort set atop acres of pristine indigenous forest on the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountain range on the Garden Route, close to the Indian Ocean coastline - just perfect for secluded romantic escapes or happy family getaways.

The resort was easy to locate between Knysna and Sedgefield and on our arrival, we were warmly greeted by our hostess, Beatrice, whose joyfulness was contagious. She explained everything and had a map ready to show us the routes through the indigenous forest, before getting onto her quad-bike and leading us to our ‘honeymoon’ cottage named ‘Moon over Milkwood’.

Teniqua Treetops have four honeymoon treehouses, each set at a distance apart. Designed over time, these suites epitomise warmth and love and all offer stunning views of the landscape. Our treehouse had a fully-equipped kitchen, spacious bedroom, bathroom, ‘snuggle room’ and wooden-deck with lovely ‘tyre’ chairs and a Weber BBQ.

For families with grown-up kids, there are two-bedroom treehouses, with indoor sitting areas within the bedrooms. These also have large deck areas with Weber BBQs and well-equipped kitchens. In addition, there are two one-bedroom family houses that are ideal for a family with toddlers. These stretch through the canopy and offer amazing views of the forested Karatara gorge far below.

After unpacking, we decided on a late afternoon walk to explore the forest where we enjoyed its tranquillity and the song of birds and squirrels – we even found an ancient Milkwood tree decorated with fairies - truly magical.

For those not wanting to wander afar, the resort also has a jacuzzi, pool, balancing beam, swings, trampoline, sandpit and a games-room for the little ones.

We later returned to our cottage to watch the sun set over the mountains. Looking out to the horizon over the tree tops and valleys brought a great sense of peace and the sheer splendour made me to rethink the meaning of life.

After dinner, a 5-Star ‘Cola Bath’ under the stars and some more stargazing, with the call of a Knysna Loerie in the background, we called it a night. Unfortunately, the next morning we had say goodbye to our paradise. I cannot wait to go there again soon!
