Union to strike over failed MTN wage demand

The Communication Workers Union (CWV) has announced that 2 000 of its members working for telecommunication giant, MTN, would go on strike from Monday regarding a dispute over higher wages.

In a statement, the union, which is demanding a 10% increase and higher earnings over weekends and holidays, said that numerous attempts to negotiate with MTN on pay and unfair labour practises had been made but to no avail.

“If the company wants to come to the table, we are very clear that we are willing to talk to any one of the MTN leadership if they want to address this matter prior to the strike but we are ready, it’s all systems go for the Communication Workers Union,”  Spokesperson Clyde Marvin was quoted by Eyewitness News as saying.

No comment from MTN on whether the strike would have an impact on customers has yet been made.
