University fees: Govt to make R4.5-bn available for poor students

The Presidency has reportedly announced that a total of R4.5-billion would be made available through the National Student Financial Scheme (NSFS), to provide for cash strapped students in 2016.

In a statement, the Presidency also stated that the funds would likely prevent a similar action to the #FeesMustFall campaign in October, when students from universities across the country embarked on a protest against the Department of Higher Education’s decision to increase fees by six percent.

This was eventually dropped following a meeting between Vice-chancellors at President Jacob Zuma at Union Buildings on October 23rd.

“The report recommends that R2.5-billion of this amount must be made available from the fiscus, in the form of loans to provide short-term debt relief to 71 753 students who were funded inadequately or were unable to access financial aid over the 2013 to 2015 academic years,” the statement read.
