Violence rocks NMMU for a third day, while thousands expected to march on Union Buildings

BY JESICA SLABBERT - OCTOBER 20, 2016

In spite of assurances from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), #FeesMustFall violence broke out again on Thursday morning between students and public order police officers. Several cars reportedly had their windows smashed by the protesters, while those, who had turned up for class were forced to again go back home.

A fire has broken out in the Nature Reserve around the Northern Campus; the cause is unknown but there is speculation that it was caused by a stun grenade that was thrown by police.

Meanwhile police have raided several students residences and arrested students, who allagedly pelted them with stones.

Elsewhere, students have begun to gather for a march at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Like last year, thousands of students are expected to march on the Union Buildings in a call for free tertiary education.

We will keep you posted on developments.
