Vital Winelands run to benefit victims of women and child abuse

Cape Town, 11 September 2015 – Grassroots organisations fighting one of South Africa’s greatest social issues, women and child abuse, will benefit from funds raised at this year’s Vital Winelands Run taking place on Saturday 14 November in Stellenbosch.

The event, which last year saw over 4 000 runners cross the finish line, includes a full marathon (42,2km), a half-marathon (21km), and a family-oriented 10km road race and 5km fun run that loop through the picturesque town of Stellenbosch. Last year the event raised R108 000, and sponsors Vital Health Foods hope to exceed that this year.

“As a company focused on the betterment of South Africans, we have an obligation to do whatever we can to protect our most vulnerable in an issue that carries horrific statistics,” says George Grieve, Managing Director for Vital Health Foods.

“With this in mind, two years ago we launched the Vital Foundation, an information-sharing and funding body designed to support grassroots organisations involved in combating the scourge of women and child abuse. The public’s response has been phenomenal, and the Vital Winelands Marathon is another opportunity to shine the spotlight on this issue.”

Now in its 38th year, the event is a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades Ultra- Marathons, held in accordance with the rules of Athletics South Africa and the Western Province Athletics Association. Helderberg Harriers Running Club and Run/Walk For Life in Somerset West organise it.

Beginning in Stellenbosch, the marathons move out past Spier wine estate, then towards Somerset West on the R44. The turning point the marathon is over the Steynrust Bridge just outside Somerset West.

The half-marathon joins up with the marathon at the 32km mark on the scenically beautiful Stellenrust Road, before both end at Eikestad Primary School.

Starting times are 05h30 for the marathon, 05h45 for the half-marathon, 06h00 for the 10km and 06h35 for the 5km fun run. All races start in Doornbosch Street in Stellenbosch and end on the sports field at neighboring Eikestad Primary School.

Cash prizes are up for grabs.
