Walmer police swiftly arrest seven suspects after armed store robbery

Officers from the Walmer Police Station, in Port Elizabeth, arrested seven suspects, aged between 16 and 28 years old, within hours after a robbery had taken place at Madiba’s Shop in Airport Valley was reported.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg; "The property taken during the robbery were also recovered."

She said that Walmer Police Station were busy attending to the Robbery at Madiba’s Shop when they received information regarding suspects involved in the robbery.

"Immediately the various units within the station responded to the information and headed out to a shack in Airport Valley. The shack was thoroughly searched and seven suspects were arrested.

"Police also seized two fire arms with ammunition , (9mm Short and a Baby Browning ), four knives, 12 cell phones, airtime to the value of R5 000, an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes, wallets and various other items which was allegedly taken during the robbery at Madiba’s shop," described Cpt van Rensburg.

It is alleged that six suspects entered the shop at 18:55, on Monday, where one suspect posed as a customer and pointed a firearm at the complainant and demanded money. They then fled with various items as mentioned above.

During the robbery no one were injured and no shots were fired.

Walmer Station Commander, Col Jacob Flemmer views this arrest as a break through and is confident that these suspects will be linked to other crimes committed within the Walmer policing precinct.

"It has been established that these suspects are repeat offenders for serious crimes within Port Elizabeth.  The Station Commander commended the officers and members involved for the swift action in apprehending these suspects," said Cpt van Rensburg

"The suspects are currently in custody and will appear at the Port Elizabeth Magistrate court on Thursday on charges of Business Robbery, Illegal Possession of firearms and ammunition, Possession of dangerous weapons and Possession of suspected stolen property."
