Walter Sisulu University security guards fingered in Vusi Mahlangu disappearance
While the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a well-known #OutsourcingMustFall activist, Vusi 'Oldman' Mahlangu, on Tuesday morning, his fellow activists have reportedly said that they believe that Walter Sisulu University security guards are behind the disappearance.
Speaking to radio station, Power FM, Lunga Mantashe, of the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (Pasma), said Mahlangu had called them to tell them he was being followed by people he believed were from Xhobane Security Services.
"We suspect that is when they caught him..." said Mantashe.
"It is very clear that this is an attempt by the recently appointed security company to bring to end the Outsourcing Must Fall movement," Mantashe said.
Mahlangu was last seen on Tuesday at 10:00 when he left a friend, Vuyo Mntonintshi's house to attend a meeting with outsourced workers at the Walter Sisulu University's Mthatha campus.
Mntonintshi said he was not sure if that had anything to do with Mahlangu's disappearance.
"It might be early to say but it might also be the case... but circumstances... lead one to assume that maybe people behind issues of service providers could be involved. But I don't want to speculate," he said.
Mantashe said Mahlangu had been mobilising workers at various institutions around the country and leading the #OutsourcingMustFall movement.
"He was noticed by the security company and he became figure. And the workers had begun to have trust in him after seeing him participating in the Outsourcing Must Fall in Gauteng," Mantashe said.
Shockingly, around 4:30pm on Tuesday, he reportedly sent his friends a Whatsapp message that read; "I am either kidnapped or arrested and I am bleeding ... in a dark place at Mthatha, my phone is about to die."
His friends reported his disappearance to the police but apparently the police told them that they could not do anything as they had to wait 48 hours to report a missing person.
Xhobani Security have since rejected having anything to do with Mahlangu’s disappearance.
Meanwhile, a group of #OutsourcingMustFall protesters are reported to have been arrested, and others shot at on Wednesday at the Walter Sisulu University's Mthatha campus.
“The information we received was that the group of security guards… on strike entered the university through a broken fence and they were confronted by another group of security guards. One of the protesting security guards was carrying a knife and he charged at one officer. He retaliated by opening fire and the other guard was shot in the stomach,” police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela told News24.
