Warning issued for PE clubbers


Port Elizabeth police have reportedly warned local club goers and pub patrons to exercise caution after the stabbing of a man outside a popular nightclub last week.

According to The Sowetan, George resident, Ulrich Gerber, had been attending a farewell party at Balizza on Friday, before being stabbed three times while walking to his car after the festivities had ended.

“As I got into my car and pushed the central locking‚ one person was [already] in the passenger seat‚ another one was behind me and one was at my door,” Gerber was quoted as saying.

“They started stabbing and hitting me‚ and I just fought back. They managed to steal my laptop‚ watch and clothes. I jumped out of the car to fight but could not breathe. I looked down and saw blood all over my top”.

Gerber stated that he tried to get help but collapsed in the parking lot before momentarily regaining consciousness to witness people standing around him. He later woke-up in hospital having suffered a punctured lung in the in the attack, which he described as “vicious‚ calculated and nearly fatal”.

Crime Intelligence stated that a warning was first issued a month ago with the main focus being on the Mount Croix‚ Walmer‚ North End and Central areas. It is also believed that the attackers had been staying in the Summerstrand area, and that police are on the lookout for a silver Volkswagen Polo used in the attacks.

Police spokeswoman, Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said that most of the incident involved patrons who had been drinking too much, making them an easy target.

“The main items stolen are cellphones‚ handbags and wallets. We are following up leads. To curb further incidents‚ patrons are urged not to park far away from the establishments,” she said.
