Warning to residents after police pelted with stones and wanted suspect escaping

JULY 15, 2016

A 25-year-old man was arrested for public violence after Gelvandale residents pelted Port Elizabeth police officers, who were in hot pursuit of a wanted suspect in the surburb's Voissen Road, on Thursday.

"Two police Constables, who were chasing the suspect on foot sustained injuries and the suspect managed to escape," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

She warned that attacks on the police will under no circumstances be tolerated.

"There is no justification whatsoever for this type of conduct by members of the community.

"The SAPS will act decisively within the parameters of the law when subjected to attack," said Colonel Naidu.

"Police officials are working tirelessly to bring safety and stability to the communities of Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale and to be attacked by that very community is extremely disappointing."

The Commander for the Mount Road SAPS Cluster, Maj Gen Rabie, also said; "We strongly warn the community against committing acts such as this. The SAPS cannot restore peace and order while under attack, it is simply unacceptable."

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
