Weekend crime crackdown nets 75 in Nelson Mandela Bay

A clampdown on disorderly conduct over the festive season resulted in the arrests of 75 people in Nelson Mandela Bay this past weekend.

Speaking in a statement, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said 26 out of the 75 arrests involved drug possession, with the remainder consisting of drunken driving (14), possession of illegal firearms (2), vehicle theft (3), shoplifting (11) and other crimes involving injuries and damage to property (19).

In a separate incident, Naidu said two suspects in their twenties were taken into custody outside a food outlet in Kabega Park on Sunday, after camping equipment, believed to have been stolen from the Van Stadens Caravan Park, were found in the boot of their Alfa Romeo. They are expected to appear in the St Albans Magistrate’s Court later today.
