Will Mandla Mandela be sent to prison

JUNE 2, 2015

Nelson Mandela’s grandson and Chief of Mvezo, Mandla Mandela, will now be sentenced on Wednesday after sentencing procedures started in the Mthatha Regional Court on Tuesday. His lawyer, Billy Gundelfinger asked that Mandela, who is also an ANC MP, be cautioned and discharged.

Mandela was found guilty of assaulting Mthatha teacher, Mlamli Ngudle, during a road rage incident in 2013 with the intent to do grievous bodily harm - an offence that could result in a jail term. The same court then acquitted on another charge of pointing a firearm.

Gundelfinger said Mandela is the family breadwinner and a first time offender, but the prosecution wants the ANC MP to be sent to prison.

It is believed Mandela attacked Ngudle along Sprigg Street, in Mthatha, after the teacher allegedly bumped a car belonging to one of Mandela's business associates.

According to Ngudle, Mandela slapped him across the face and kicked him while pointing him with a firearm.

However, Magistrate Noluthando Conjwa found that there had not been evidence supporting the allegation of the pointing of a firearm.

The Magistrate will deliver her sentence tomorrow morning.

The ANC said it would wait for sentencing before deciding on Mandela’s future as the party’s MP.
