Willowvale students burn down school in protest

JUNE 10, 2015

Learners from Mpozolo Senior Secondary School, situated at Mpozolo Location, Mendu Village, in Willowvale, might write their exams in the open after their angry schoolmates allegedly burnt down the school on Monday morning.

It is alleged that the learners were complaining about school buildings that needed renovations and claimed that the authorities were ignoring their calls.

Trouble started when the schools inspector was called to address the learners. The learners reportedly pelted the inspector's vehicle with stones and damaged it. That is when they moved onto burning the school.

The fire destroyed all the books, learning equipment and other documents - an estimated R1 million in damage.

The school management reported the incident to the police and a case of arson was opened and no arrests have been made yet, as investigation continues.

A case of malicious damage to the property was also opened by the inspector. No one has been arrested yet.

Butterworth Station Commander, Colonel Sipho Hokwana appealed to the learners not to resort to violence and crime or vandalising and destroying public property when addressing their concerns.
