Wounded PE suspect arrested after housebreaking scuffle, accomplices on the run

JUNE 17, 2016

A Port Elizabeth man, aged between 20-30 years, is expected in a local court soon after he was arrested after being shot in the leg during an early Monday morning home invasion.

"It is alleged that this morning at about 00:30, the owner of a house in Fairview, Walmer heard noises outside her house. When she looked through the window, she saw three men attempting to break into her house. The complainant managed to exit the house and alerted her neighbour," described police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"When they returned to the house, the suspects had already broken into her home and the suspects were busy packing the stolen property outside.

"A confrontation between the neighbour and the suspects ensued. One of the men attempted to stab the neighbour, who retaliated by shooting him in his leg. The other two suspects ran away."

The suspect was arrested and detained for housebreaking.

"Police would like to encourage homeowners to safeguard the area where you sleep by installing a security gate in the passage leading to the bedrooms. Identify possible escape routes and get to know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support. If in danger, one can always lean on each other for assistance," said Colonel Naidu.
