#ZumaMustFall tops Oscar on social media

DECEMBER 11, 2015

Calls for President Jacob Zuma to be removed from office have pushed former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius into second place in local social media this week, media monitoring company ROi Africa said on Monday.

This followed the announcement by Zuma on Wednesday night that he was replacing Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene with ANC backbencher David van Rooyen.

The move saw the rand plummet and sparked fears that the country was moving closer to "junk" status.

Since then #ZumaMustFall started trending on Twitter, with many calling on the ANC to recall the president.

A Facebook #ZumaMustFall event has also been created to announce a peaceful march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on December 16 at 10:00.

ROi said #ZumaMustFall garnered 43.29% of social media and #FinanceMinister 7.62%.

The Supreme Court of Appeal's ruling on Pistorius was at 29.8%.

Last week, almost 70% of social media activity was dedicated to the ruling handed down in Bloemfontein, which found Pistorius guilty of murder.
