The police are investigating the possible involvement of an 11-year-old boy in the death of a ten-month-old baby girl after the child’s body was found with head injuries and bruises in a yard in the Botsalano settlement near Potchefstroom in the North West.

According to col. Adéle Myburgh, police spokesperson, indicates information that the baby’s mother left her in the care of a friend on Thursday. The neighbours’ (of the girlfriend’s) 11-year-old son apparently arrived at this house at 20:00 that evening and argued that the baby’s grandmother had sent him to come and collect the child.

The girlfriend allegedly handed the baby over to the boy to take to her grandmother. However, she found the baby’s body in her yard the next morning.

Myburgh says the woman called the police immediately after the gruesome discovery. Emergency services pronounced the baby dead at the scene. The Morokweng police are now investigating a case of murder.

“The 11-year-old boy, who is currently in the care of his parent, will be evaluated by a social worker.

“He will be dealt with in terms of the Children’s Act, and a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of the baby’s death.”

Lt. Gen. Sello Kwena, provincial police commissioner, lamented the incident. In the meantime, he requested the community to give the police space to complete the investigation and ensure that justice is done.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sgt. Call Neo Boitse on 066 154 9891.
