6 medals for SA at World Championship

South Africa collected six medals at the World Para Athletics Championships in Japan with stars such as Simoné Kruger and Mpumelelo Mhlongo standing on the top step of the podium.

The 19-year-old Kruger improved her own world record in the discus event (T38 division) with her great effort of 38.82 m.

She set her previous record of 38.10m at the previous World Championship in Paris.

Mhlongo in turn won South Africa’s first gold medal in Japan when he won the 100 m (T44 division) with a spectacular time of 11.34 s.

The 30-year-old sprinter was also the defending champion after he won the 100 m in 2023 with his run of 11.46 s in the French capital.

Puseletso Mabote collected a silver medal for his team with his brilliant time of 12.05 s in the 100 m finals for T63 athletes.

He also set a new championship record of 12.04 s in the heats, but Germany’s Leon Schäfer improved it again in the finals with his run of 12.03 s.

Collen Mahlalela also contributed to the medal party with a silver medal performance in his World Championship debut.

He finished second in the 400 m for T47 athletes.

Then Louzanne Coetzee and her guide, Estean Badenhorst, collected the bronze medal in the 1,500 m for T11 athletes with her time of 4:50.78, while Liezel Gouws also tasted bronze in the 400 m for T37 athletes.
