Maropene Ramokgopa was named acting minister of sports, arts and culture on Friday until a permanent appointment is made under the new administration of South Africa.

Ramokgopa’s appointment by pres. Cyril Ramaphosa follows after Zizi Kodwa submitted his letter of resignation as sports minister on Wednesday.

Kodwa has been Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture since March last year and before that was the Deputy Minister of State Security (2019 to 2013).

His resignation comes a few days after the results of the just-concluded national election, which was an enormous setback for the ANC.

For the first time in 30 years, the party did not achieve a majority vote and walked out of the election with 40%. This means that the party also had to give up a few seats in parliament.

Coalition talks are currently underway between political parties and the process to establish the seventh administration of South Africa is underway.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo handed over the lists of names of the new members of the National Assembly and provincial legislators to Xolile George, secretary of parliament, on Thursday.

A date for the first parliamentary session is expected to be announced soon.
