Afrikaans birthday: Wishes from Germany

Henry

Afrikaans first received its status as an official language in South Africa on 8 May 1925. In the run-up to next year’s big celebrations of the language’s 100th birthday, Alexander Mickel sent RNnews readers a letter from Germany.

Alex is a German who taught himself to write and speak Afrikaans. He is now a passionate Afrikaans speaker in Germany with a large network of Afrikaans friends in South Africa. His letter is published just as he sent it to us. The letter has not been edited or edited. -Save

Afrikaans celebrates its 99th birthday as an official language on 8 May. As a German, who taught himself Afrikaans, I have now celebrated eleven years together and am looking forward to the 100th birthday and my twelfth year with the language. May there be many more…

Afrikaans has enriched my life because I can also understand texts in Dutch and Flemish. I like Afrikaans words like “gunsie”, “delicious”, “coffee”, “beautiful” and especially “flippen”. “Frying” of course too!

I have made contact with so many kind people – all of them make my heart beat warm! I also enjoy the contact with Afrikaans speakers from education or institutions such as Akademia. I am always eager to learn new words and this is how I keep the language alive on my end: I use it quite simply, quite (accidentally) with my German friends and colleagues, and I make every thing a language lesson and come ask when I didn’t understand something, or what something means! This means that Afrikaans speakers have to think about their language and sometimes also learn new things.

Many thanks to all Afrikaans acquaintances and friends who are interested in my Afrikaans path! Thank you very much, RNews, for walking the road with me and publishing my first reader’s letter in 2017!

Many thanks to all people and organizations that promote and protect the language! Keep it up!

Congratulations, Afrikaans, on your 99th birthday!
