Alcaraz finishes playing with Sonego

It took Carlos Alcaraz four sets against Lorenzo Sonego to qualify for the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The final score was 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 and 7-6 in the young Spaniard’s favor and he just celebrated his 157th victory in an ATP match.

“Both of us played with high intensity and came up with some excellent shots. I was even happy with my game in the second set,” said the world’s second best player.

Alcaraz will play Shang Juncheng in the third round on Sunday. The Chinese have already finished with Mackenzie McDonald and Sumit Nagal in Melbourne.

In one of today’s other matches, France’s Arthur Cazaux caused a stir when he beat Holger Rune 7-6, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3.

The 20-year-old Rune is the Australian Open’s eighth seeded men’s player.

“It was pure madness. My voice is a bit hoarse now, but it was almost a fiery duel for you,” the Frenchman said after the showdown.

“Holger is a great player and I know him very well. I knew in advance that he would fight for every point and I was now ready for him.”

Cazaux hit a total of 51 game-winning shots.
