Alex Murdaugh severely punished for financial crimes

Alex Murdaugh, the well-known lawyer from the US state of South Carolina who was found guilty of murdering his wife and son last year, was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Monday for financial crimes.

Murdaugh (55) is already serving a life sentence after killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul (22), in June 2021 on the family’s estate.

Murdaugh pleaded guilty last year to state charges of stealing millions of dollars from clients of his prominent law firm and was sentenced to 27 years in prison. He was back in court Monday for sentencing on federal charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering.

The 40-year prison sentence will be served concurrently with the 27 years he has already received.

Murdaugh killed his wife and son after realizing his years-long looting of millions of dollars from his law firm and from clients to pay for his hidden opioid addiction was about to become public. The three-week murder trial was broadcast live and captivated viewers across America and abroad.

Evidence from his son’s cell phone indicated that Murdaugh was the only person with them several minutes before Maggie was killed with an assault rifle and Paul with a shotgun.

Murdaugh denied killing his wife and younger son, but admitted to stealing millions of dollars from clients of his law firm to support an opioid addiction.
