At least five people died on Saturday when a bus carrying ANC supporters to the Mbombela stadium in Mpumalanga rolled down a slope. The accident occurred around 03:30 on the R71 in Magoebaskloof, Tzaneen.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety says three buses were allegedly driving behind each other when the third bus hit the second one from behind. The bus overturned in a ravine.

“There are unconfirmed reports of five deaths. Several passengers sustained injuries. The injured persons were taken to hospitals in the Mopani district,” said a statement by the department.

Florence Radzilani, provincial MEC for transport, and other government leaders are excused from the January 8 statement meeting in Mbombela to visit the accident scene. The MEC for health, dr. Phophi Ramathuba, Molemole Municipality Executive Mayor Edward Paya, and other government leaders will join her. They will also visit patients in the various hospitals.

The road was closed after the accident while rescue workers cleared the scene. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
