Police in East London says they arrested a total of 10 suspects at road blocks held in the Cambridge area of the City over the past weekend.  Over 200 vehicles were also stopped and searched.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi, the road blocks were mannedby Eastern Cape Provincial Traffic, immigration officials and various police units from around Cambridge policing precinct.

“Five people were arrested on warrant of arrest over outstanding traffic fines and five were arrested for drunken driving,” he said.

He added that they also distributed pamphlets to motorists about the impending firearm amnesty period – where residents with unlicensed firearms can declare them to authorities without the fear of being arrested.

The Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko, announced the firearm amnesty period for 2017 to run for a six month period, starting 1 April 2017 and ending on 30 September 2017.
