The Willowvale Regional Magistrate's Court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Athenkosi Waka, to undergo 10 years behind bars.

"It is alleged that the accused was walking with a 15-year-old girl on 8 November 2016, at about 22:00, at Nolangeni Locality, Mente Village, Willowvale," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"Both of them were from a traditional ceremony.

"On the way the accused, who was armed with a stick threatened the victim with the stick."

Capt Manatha said that the accused then raped her.

"A case of rape was registered at Willowvale Police Station leading to the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigating the case."

He said that the accused was later traced and arrested.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, welcomed the sentence as it will serve as a deterrent to other would-be rapists.

However, he warned the villagers to end their traditional ceremonies at 17:00 to avoid crimes such as rape and murder.
