Metro and Cerebos train unemployed Motherwell youths
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Motherwell Urban Renewal Program (MURP), in partnership with locally based salt producer, Cerebos, hosted a certificate handover ceremony to recognise the efforts of 10 underprivileged learners, who had undergone various business and skills development training.
The certificate ceremony was attended by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Deputy Mayor: Cllr Mongameli Bobani at Siyaphambili School in Motherwell, on 25 August 2015.
Before being selected for the course, unemployed youth from the Motherwell area, aged 18-21 underwent a stringent selection process consisting of various literacy and numeracy tests. 30 learners were then shortlisted and inducted into a skills development training course, focused on new venture creation, teaching them the valuable skills required to start a businesses.
The learners underwent a 3 month SETA accredited training course, comprising of theoretical and practical case studies, where learners went out into their community to conduct research on locally based businesses. Learners were certified based on the following aspects:
- Demonstrate and understanding of an entrepreneurial profile.
- Apply innovative thinking to the development of a small business.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the function of the market mechanisms in a new venture.
- Research the viability of new venture ideas/opportunities.
- Attend to customer queries in an office setting.
