Galerie Noko launches New Now Next 2016 competition for local artists

Galerie Noko, in partnership with the Summerstrand Hotel, hosted the launch of the New Now Next 2016 Visual Arts competition, on Tuesday evening at the Summerstrand Hotel in Port Elizabeth.

This competition was conceptualized to discover and create pathways or platforms for emerging contemporary artists and to give them support.

“Art is very close to my families heart, and this [Summerstrand Hotel] being a family hotel we are very proud to be in association with Galerie Noko,” said Summerstrand Hotel Manager and Director, Inge Hartmann.

“There are so many artists out there that we feel passionately about, there’s no better opportunity for them to show their work. They are young, up-and-coming and they really do deserve everything that they can get.”

Usen Obot, owner of Galerie Noko in Port Elizabeth, said that this event will help young emerging artists, who have just come out of university or are still in university, that don’t know how to get their works exposed.

He also said that this event would help the Eastern Cape create its own brand when it comes to art, and create a foothold so that more artists and collectors will want to come into the province and in turn promote the local artists and their works.

“I believe what we are trying to pursue will yield enormous fruit not only to the artists, but for the entire Port Elizabeth community. I believe it will also impact on other industries because when it grows, a lot of other things will be born out of that,” added Obot.

This competition is open to artists between the ages of 18 and 34, who live in South Africa.

First prize for the competition is The Hartmann Prize of R25 000 cash, which is sponsored by the Summerstrand Hotel, and an artist residency. The Second and Third place winners will each receive a two month artists’ residency and mentorship from Galerie Noko.

All interested artists, who wish to participate must submit 3-6 original artworks, no more or less, which have not been previously exhibited. The deadline for submissions is the 3rd of December 2016.

This exhibition will be made open to the public from the 14th of December 2016 at Galerie Noko, situated in 109-111 Russel Road in Richmond Hill, Port Elizabeth.
