Several disruptive operations that were conducted over the past weekend in the Uitenhage Police Cluster resulted in the arrest of a total of 111 suspects for various crimes.

"These arrests included a string of offences of which two suspects (ages 23 and 35) were apprehended within minutes after committing a crime, by members of the Crime Combatting Unit attached to the Uitenhage Operational Command Centre, on Sunday morning," described police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"Their arrest came about after a VW Polo Cross was hijacked in Qhoqho Street, Kwanobuhle.

"The vehicle was also recovered. The two suspects are due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court soon."

Captain Swart said that the community of Despatch also assisted the SAPS and arrested a 19-year-old male suspect, who was allegedly involved in a business robbery on Saturday afternoon.

"Four persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor and 19 suspects were apprehended for the illegal possession of drugs," she added.

Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll said: “The reduction of crime in the Uitenhage Cluster will remain the number one priority for the police officials in this area and they will continue with their efforts to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster”.

The South African Police Service appealed to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.
