The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old man to 12 years behind bars for raping a 28-year-old woman last year.

"It is alleged that the victim was from a tarven at Bika Township, Butterworth on her way home on the 13 August 2017, at about 02:15. She heard footsteps behind her," described police spokesperson, captain Jackson Manatha.

"The accused - now identifed as Sive Boyce, grabbed the victim from behind and overpowered her.

"He then raped the victim, but was disturbed by other people, who were also coming from the same tarven.

"The victim had a chance of running to her home where she told her mother she had been raped."

Apparently, Boyce went to the home of the victim demanding to rape the victim again.

"The mother of the victim screamed and alerted the residents that the accused wanted to rape her daughter again," said Capt Manatha.

"The accused ran away.

"A case of rape was registered at Msobomvu Police Station, Butterworth."

The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

The accused was traced and arrested.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the sentence handed to the accused.

He praised the investigating officer of the case for her good work.

Brigadier Xakavu warned and appealed to women not to walk alone in dark areas as they become crime victims.

According to the 2017/2018 crime stats released on Tuesday, sexual crimes worsened by over 8%.
