Port Elizabeth police got a tip-off about the hijacked Opel Corsa

Port Elizabeth - Following up on information from the community paid off when Port Elizabeth police arrested three suspects, between the ages of 15 and 26 years, for the possession of suspected stolen property and illegal possession of a firearm.

"Members from the Cash-in-Transit Hijacking Task Team immediately responded when they received information about a suspected hijacked vehicle," said police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

"The members proceeded to Kenako Mall, in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, in search of a silver Opel Corsa."

She said that at approximately 09:50 on Friday, they spotted the vehicle and as they requested the occupants to get out, they noticed a firearm behind the driver's seat.

"A. 38 special revolver (serial number filled off) was confiscated. It was later established that the vehicle was hijacked on the 2nd of May 2019 in 7th Ave, Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth."

Capt Janse Van Rensburg said that all three suspects were detained on charges of possession of suspected hijacked vehicle and illegal possession of firearm.

"The firearm will be forwarded to ballistic for testing and the suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday."
