15 years behind bars for man who handed himself in after killing teen

Police have welcomed the conviction and sentencing of a 25-year-old man, Thembelani Mavela, to 15 years behind bars in a trial lasting less than nine months.

"Mavela was sentenced on Friday at Zwelitsha Regional Court after he stabbed to death a 19-year-old male last year in November. After the stabbing he handed himself and the weapon he used to the police," described police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

"He first appeared at Zwelitsha Magistrate's Court on the 07th November 2017. He was granted a bail of R1 000 and appeared several times at Zwelitsha Magistrate Court."

On Friday, 24 August 2018, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder.

SAPS Zwelitsha Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Zanekhaya Kana, said he is happy about the conviction and sentencing of the suspect.

He commended the job well done by the Investigating Officer in ensuring that perpetrators of crime are behind bars.
