Man expected in court for killing 77-year-old woman

The around-the-clock investigation into the murder of a 77-year-old Centane woman yielded positive results as investigators arrested a 26-year-old man on Friday.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, the deceased, identified as Nongqongile Sololo, who was staying alone at Rwatsini Location, Gcina Village, Centane, was allegedly murdered by the suspect during the night of Wednesday 12 July at her home.

"The deceased suffered upper body injuries. The motive for the murder is clear at this point in time," he said.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey, expressed shock at the senseless murder of elderly people and vowed that all those, who are implicated in such cases will be brought to book to face the consequences of their ruthless deeds.

He said that non-stop investigation of such cases is in line with the SAPS' Back to Basics policing approach, which requires efficient and responsive investigation of crime utilizing all resources at our disposal to ensure that offenders are brought to book.

The suspect will appear before the Centane Magistrate's Court on Monday.
