Armed hijackers flee empty-handed after fight with 62-year-old Kabega Park man

A 62-year-old Kabega Park man fought off armed hijackers, who stole his vehicle while he was attempting to open his garage door.

"It is alleged that on Tuesday, at about 19:15, the elderly man  and his wife had just arrived home and while he was struggling to open his garage door, two unknown persons entered the yard," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"One of the males offered to assist. The complainant was then threatened with a firearm.

"His vehicle, a Renault Sedan, was taken by the two  suspects."

She said that the complainant grappled with the suspects and even got into the vehicle and succeeded in pushing the driver out of the moving vehicle.

"The vehicle collided into a lamp post," added Col Naidu.

"The complainant and his wife were both 'pistol-whipped' on their  heads. The suspects ran off without taking the vehicle."

Police are investigating a case of vehicle hijacking and no arrests made.

Colonel Naidu said that police would like to warn victims of crime that the aim is to survive the crime and to be cautious when challenging a hijacker especially if the suspect/s are armed.

"Property can be replaced but not lives," she added.
