16 candidates contesting ward by-elections in Eastern Cape on Wednesday

East London - Sixteen candidates will contest four municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday. The by-elections will be contested by candidates from six political parties as well as two independent candidates.

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

  • Ward 19 in Buffalo City Municipality – BUFwill be contested by four (4) candidates, namely Rodwell Cecil Fredericks from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Cedric Brian Pringle from the African National Congress (ANC), Johannes Dick Green from the Democratic Alliance (DA), and Buntu Stevens Sityo from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.60% and the DA candidate won the ward with 73.67% of valid votes.

  • Ward 15 in Encgobo Municipality – EC137will be contested by three (3) candidates and one independent, namely Solethu Mtsali.  The candidates are Thembinkosi Ngxangani from the ANC, Nonceba Xhinti from the EFF, and Nandipha Rashula from the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 50.84% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 80.64% of valid votes. Note that the voting stations in this ward will close earlier and will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.

  • Ward 29 in King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality – EC157will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely Mlawuli Marasha from the ANC, Nonceba Ngeni from the EFF, and James Dlamini from the UDM.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor being sentenced to prison. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 46.73% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 47.45% of valid votes.

  • Ward 20 in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMAwill be contested by six (6) candidates and one (1) independent Herald Mfundo Ngcelwane.  The candidates are MC Claren Mandilake Njamela from the ACDP, Mzimkulu Morris Ngabase from the ANC, Nandipa Qongqo from the DA, Akhona Yaze from the EFF, Sandile Patrick Kayana from the Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party (SRWP), and Vukile Dlakavu from the UDM.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the termination of councillor’s membership from the party. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.01% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 72.24% of valid votes.
