Gelvandale cop appears in court for murder of her baby's father

A 32-year-old policewoman from Gelvandale appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning on a charge of murder.

According to police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu, on 2 July 2017, the body of Constable Vuyo Matshisi (36) was found in the boot of a burnt out car in Peddie.

"Investigations revealed that the last cell phone reception was picked up from the house of Constable Nosicelo Kamba in New Brighton, the previous day (1/07)," she described.

"She is also the mother of his five-month-old child.

"On 14 August, Lunga Mbondo (34) was arrested in Kareedouw and charged for Matshisi’s murder."

He appeared in court and was remanded in police custody until 30 August.

Col Naidu said that Kamba will appear in the New Brighton Court again on 30 August for a formal bail application.

"The case is being investigated by the Hawks in Port Elizabeth," she added.

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Maj Gen Funeka Siganga, has expressed her concern especially when "one of our own is suspected of a heinous crime against  a colleague".

Maj Gen Siganga has called on members "to seek the assistance of our professional counsellors within the SAPS (Employee Health and Wellness)".

"We have social services in the organization that can assist our members cope in difficult times."
