As the school rugby season fast approaches an end, with many schools having completed their weekly derby schedules on Saturday, there saw some scintillating Eastern Cape 1st XV match-ups to conclude the 2017 winter season.

In the EC highlight, Grey High hosted Selborne College in their traditional and stapled ‘last match’ match of the season.

In last year’s encounter in East London, the match was split right down the middle in a game of two halves, with Grey High coming back from 27-0 down in the first half, to losing just 27-21; so the derby on Saturday this-time round was a highly anticipated one.

Fortunately though for the home side, their consistency in all facets of the game, as opposed to Selborne’s indefinites in game-plan and incoherence that has plagued them throughout the whole season; saw Grey High cruise to a 57-22 victory.

Grey High certainly bounced back after being pommelled 73-10 by rivals Grey College two weeks ago, and what a statement they made on Saturday to fine-tune their season.

The opening stages were tough, but Grey High broke the ice in the 17th minute, when outside centre Kholiwe Konza snatched an intercept and scored an approximate 60-metre try.

Just 10 minutes later, Grey High then dispersed the ball well to out-flank Selborne out-wide, as inside centre Ayabonga Matroos blitzed over the line for Grey’s second try.

On the brink of half-time, Grey High then scored the try of the match when they capitalised on a failed Selborne chip kick, as lock Laken Grey gathered the airborne ball and broke away, before an ankle tap saw him ground with the ball, but a quick-thinking pop-up to Matroos set up quick interplay with two supporting runners, as hooker Ruan Jonker was the last receiver for a try in the corner.

With the scores at 19-0 to Grey, they then rubbed salt in Selborne’s wounds with another intercept try by Konza; which certainly began darkening the visitors’ hopes as the scores projected 26-0 at half-time.

Selborne then broke ice when they scored a superb individual try by flyhalf David Coetzer seven minutes into the second half, after an overlap saw him receive the ball about 65-metres out, but quick feet and great envision, saw him cross the line not needing his support runners.

Grey High were then weary of a possible Selborne comeback, much like they almost achieved a year ago when they were well-downed at half-time, but they continued to accelerate when flyhalf Waqar Solaan was sent in a gap on Selborne’s line to score another seven-pointer.

14 minutes into the second half then saw Solaan make an exceptional long-range break, before passing to fullback Sihle Njezula, who sucked in three defenders, before then offloading back to Solaan, who stumbled over and accredited himself for another try.

With the scores at that point 40-7 to Grey, there was no coming back for Selborne, as pride just staked for the visitors. Each side scored three further tries apiece, as Grey outscored Selborne nine tries to four to conclude the match.
