25-year-old Dutywa man jailed for life for 2015 rape

Eastern Cape police on Thursday welcomed the life imprisonment handed down to Xolisa Mhlonyana, aged 25 years, on Tuesday in the Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court for the rape of a 22-year-old woman on the 31 July 2015 at about 23:45 at Sakwe Park, Dutywa.

"We trust that the lengthy sentence will serve as a deterrent to criminals preying on women who are not in a position to defend themselves," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"Violence committed against women is in the forefront of our fight against crime and offenders can expect that our investigators will pursue every avenue to ensure their conviction."

According to Captain Manatha, it is alleged that the 22-year-old rape woman was on her way home from work.

"When she was about to open the gate of her yard, the accused came and accosted her.

"The accused then dragged the victim to a dark area where he repeatedly raped her," he described.

"The accused also robbed the victim of undisclosed amount of money. He [however] could not get the cellphone of the victim."

A case of rape was registered at Dutywa Police Station.

The Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) took over the case for investigation and the accused was traced and arrested.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Liziwe Ntshinga congratulated Butterworth FCS Unit for sterling job.
