VIDEO: NWU outplays determined Madibaz in Varsity Netball clash

In a high-intensive Varsity Netball affair between the FNB-NMU Madibaz and North West University at the NMU Indoor Sports Centre on Monday night, there saw a determined Madibaz side give it their all in what was their last home clash of the season.

It was to no avail though, as the class of NWU on the day just out-shun the Madibaz’ girls in all fronts – which explains why the girls from Potchefstroom are currently unbeaten heading into the last round next week with six wins from six.

The Madibaz started strongly, however, and stretched their abilities all over the court and took their little opportunities that were on offer, including a goal in the first-quarter power-play. NWU lead just 18-11 at half-time, with the NMU girls having a sniff for a possible upset.

It was in the second half, however, where NWU began firing on all cylinders, which included great cover defence, and good links to their attacking play – which kept their score consistently ticking, ahead of the Madibaz.

By the end of the third quarter, NWU lead 31-15, and in the final quarter, the Potch girls went even more riot, netting in 13 more goals, to NMU’s six – meaning NWU won 26-10 in the second half alone, and 44-21 for the match’s final score.

NWU’s Rome Dreyer was resilient, and formed a fine link between their defence and the scorers in the mid-court throughout the game, and her exuberant energy earned her the FNB Player of the Match. The Madibaz’ Bianca Blom, however, won the Samsung Best Shot Award.

Nolusindiso Twani also took control from the front for NMU, and disrupted many of NWU’s attacking plays, as she starred on both defence and attack for the PE girls.

NWU are currently topping the Varsity Netball standings unbeaten, while NMU are currently languishing near the middle of the order at 5th. The Madibaz are set to play their last match against Maties in Stellenbosh next Monday.
