Five Sunshine Coast properties bring back awards from 2017 Lilizela Awards

The Sunshine Coast is becoming a top holiday destination of choice, nestled between the Garden Route and the Wild Coast. Home to 10 rivers, big 5 Game Reserves, and pristine outdoor experiences and adventures.

“At the recent getaway show in Johannesburg, it was evident that South African tourists are seeking new experiences and holiday destinations,|” describes Sandy Birch, Tourism Manager at Sunshine Coast Tourism.

She said that while many South African travellers prefer to holiday in the KZN, Mpamulanga and the Western Cape, there is a marked upward shift in visitor numbers and interest in the area.

“The current economic climate has made it prohibitive for many South Africans to travel abroad, thus they are exploring more of South Africa,” Birch explaines.

“At the same time, the favourable exchange rate makes South Africa a very attractive choice for overseas visitors.

“All of this bodes well for the Eastern Cape, as a whole, as discerning travellers are searching the web for new experiences, many choosing to discover the Eastern Cape.”

She says that Sunshine Coast Tourism is extremely proud that a total of eight prestigious Lilizela Awards were granted to five properties on the Sunshine Coast.

These awards are granted by the South African Grading Council in collaboration with SA Tourism and recognise and reward tourism players and businesses, who work passionately and with pride to deliver a world-class product and service and whose delivery grows South Africa’s global destination competitiveness,” Birch describes.

Top honours went to Sibuya Game Reserve, who won three awards for Best Accommodation 4-Star Game Lodge; Best Wildlife Encounter and Best Nature Guide.

The Royal St Andrews Hotel, in Port Alfred, was awarded first place in the 4-Star Hotel Category in the Eastern Cape.

Oceana Beach and Wildlife Reserve, also in Port Alfred, was awarded first place in the 4-Star Hotel Category in the Eastern Cape.

The Oyster Box Beach House, in Kenton-on-Sea, won the award for best 5-Star Self-Catering establishment in the Eastern Cape, while Cannon Rocks Holiday Resort won the best 5 Star Caravan Park in the province.
