17 women and four men arrested at Queenstown service delivery strike

Twenty-one suspects, 17 women and four men, have been arrested and charged for public violence, malicious damage to property and contravention of the National Road and Traffic Act following a spike of service delivery protests that began early on Monday in Queenstown.

"A community hall in Ezibeleni was also burned down," described police spokesperson, Capt Khaya Tonjeni.

"Police continue to maintain a heavy presence in the area and are moving in between N6 national road and the road connecting Cathcart and Whittlesea.

"The situation is volatile and police continue to monitor the actions of the protesters."

Capt Tonjeni appealed to road users to drive on the affected routes around Queenstown and neighbouring towns with caution.

"We are also encouraged them to consider alternative routes to avoid delays and further inconvenience as a solution to the impasse is being sought."
