Efforts to fight the proliferation of illegal firearms in the Humansdorp Cluster paid off on Monday, at about 13:15, when a 17-year-old male was arrested with an unlicensed firearm - a .38 special revolver, and several rounds of ammunition.

According to police spokesperson,  Capt Gerda Swart, "Members from Humansdorp SAPS were busy conducting routine patrols between Vaaldam and Gill Marcus, Humansdorp, when they received information from community members about a suspect carrying a firearm."

She said that the officers acted immediately and through thorough and responsive investigations the suspect was found in possession of the firearm.

"The 17-year-old male suspect was arrested on charges ranging from the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition," Capt Swart added.

"The suspect is due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrates’ Court on  Tuesday on the respective charges. The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain whether it was used in the commission of other crimes."

She said that the South African Police Service will continue with their Back to Basics approach, with the aim to intensify operations in order to ensure the safety of all citizens.

Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier John Lebok, thanked the community for alerting the police and he thanked the members for their vigilance in ensuring that they bring those culprits who break the law, to book.
