Manhunt launched after dangerous criminals escape from jail, public warned

Elliotdale  police, near Mthatha, have issued a warning to the public following the escape of three dangerous awaiting trial prisoners. According to police information, the suspects escaped from custody at Elliotdale Police Station on Saturday, at about 17h55.

"The incident occured when two members were conducting their routine inspections. It is allleged that members were overpowered by the inmates in the cell block," police said.

"The escapees quickly disappeared while the two members were locked inside the cells and left unharmed.

"An intensive search was conducted immediately last night with negative results and police are still hot on their trail."

The names of the prisoners are as follows: 

  • Bonginkosi Ndevu (24) from Mkathazo Elliodale, who was arrested for armed robbery that occured in Willowvale in April 2017;
  • Akhona Paji (25) from Khasa Elliotdale, who was arrested for rape and murder that occured in April 2017 and
  • Mziwonke Coli (32), who was arrested for armed robbery that occured at Boxer Store in Mqanduli in November 2016.

"An internal enquiry into the escape has also been launched," police added.

"Police request the community not to approach or attempt to apprehend the suspects as they are considered dangerous.

"Report information on their whereabouts to the nearest police station or contact the investigating officer Detective Constable Phuthumani Tambo on 0730349376 or alternatively on his office line at 047-577 0005 or Crime Stop 086010111."
