George Municipality Thanks Vodacom

The current water crisis in the Southern Cape and in George  - with the Garden Route dam levels reaching lows of 41, 2 % over the past two months  - have highlighted the concept of Ubuntu - an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. George Municipality would like to thank Vodacom for demonstrating the true spirit of Ubuntu by using it’s technology to assist with a dedicated SMS communication line.

Eden County Manager for Vodacom, Claire Boltman willingly and immediately took up the task of originating a corporate social responsibility campaign when approached by the George Municipal Communications Manager, Chantel Edwards-Klose and by September a dedicated Water Scarce SMS campaign was running to all Vodacom subscribers in George.

Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha said: “Our communications department has been working hard to reach citizens with vital information on the drought conditions we are experiencing, using as many communication platforms as possible. A fantastic total of 335 930 SMS were sent out by Vodacom. Even Cape Talk Radio Station picked this up and commented on how pro-active George Municipality has been in addressing the water scarcity we are facing.”

Using available technology, Vodacom ensured that the message was only received once by Vodacom subscribers living in George and also targeted Vodacom subscribers travelling in and around the area.

Executive Mayor for George, Melvin Naik thanked Vodacom for their tremendous contribution to the water crisis.  “George Municipality continues to successfully partner with corporate companies and on a project such as this one which is so important to the future of our City as well as our citizens – we cannot thank Vodacom enough for their willingness in aiding us to get the all important message out. Water is one of our largest, but also most threatened natural resource -and we need to protect it with all we have,” said Naik.
