189 students from the IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth campus graduated on Thursday, 12 April with degrees, diplomas and higher certificates.

Deputy Registrar Liz King from The Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd (The IIE) capped the excited graduates. The graduation ceremony, which took place at the Feather Market Convention Centre, was attended by family, friends and loved ones who came out to witness this auspicious occasion.

Said The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth Principal Paul Manson: “I urge you all to succeed in whatever you choose to do, but not at all cost.

"To come first does not always necessarily mean to win. Strive to achieve your goals with honour and integrity, because these are the values that will carry you far. And remember, in a country like South Africa, there are so many more needy people than yourselves.

"Give generously and look after the less fortunate. You have earned this qualification, and with it comes great responsibility. I don’t use the word responsibility lightly, as I truly believe the next business and society leaders will be coming from the ranks of our graduates. The educated elite, that you now join, have a responsibility to the rest of the country.”

As part of the graduation ceremony Naude Loots, Vice Principal of Operations announced the top graduates with the highest overall average in each of The IIE qualifications. These graduates received the Top Achiever Award in recognition of all outstanding academic achievements.

Miche-Lee Van Schalkwyk (The IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Law) received an aggregate of 80% and 22 distinctions, while Tarquin Harmse graduated with an aggregate of 84% and 24 distinctions.

The 2017 Top Achiever graduates are: Dewald Booyens (The IIE Higher Certificate in Business Principles and Practice), Tamara Guthrie (The IIE Higher Certificate in Event Management), Patience Tetteh (The IIE Diploma in Commerce in Business Management), Ryan Calitz (The IIE Diploma in Sport Development and Management), Lezanne Korkie (The IIE Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management), Damon Thompson (The IIE Bachelor of Commerce), Mihlali Mtwa (The IIE Diploma in Public Relations), Sherronay George (The IIE Bachelor of Arts), Zaydia Wallace (The IIE Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication), Gabriela Ibarzabal (The IIE Higher Certificate in Information Technology in Support Services).

“My time at Varsity has brought so much joy and pleasure, the small classes and interactive learning has made my road to success much easier. There were times where I wanted to give up, there were a few tears, shouts and screams, but in the end it was worth it.

"The smile and satisfaction after I had received my qualification was definitely worth burning the candle at both ends. Being top graduate has not yet sunken in, it is a great honour and privilege, I could not have achieved this without the help of all of my lecturers, they made the patch to success much more easier. The past three (3) years have been my most proud
moments.”

Says Miche-Lee Van Schalkwyk, top graduate for IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Law. Miche-Lee is currently continuing her studies and is studying towards a Bachelor of Law degree.

The IIE’s Varsity College is very proud of all their graduates and wishes them every success as they start the next chapter of their lives.
