Police seize abalone worth nearly R1 million in Port Elizabeth

The PE K9 unit on Friday seized abalone valued at nearly R1 million after receiving information about a suspicious bakkie in Marine Drive in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth.

"The members with the assistance of a private security company held observation on the vehicle.

"The vehicle was stopped by police and on searching it, nothing suspicious or illegal could be found inside," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The driver was allowed to leave."

She said that the K9 members then combed the immediate area of where the vehicle was stopped and in nearby bushes, 15 bags of abalone was found.

"The weight of the molluscs is approx. 625kg’s with a total amount of 2500 units."

The estimated value is R937 500.

No arrest were made and the abalone was confiscated and will be handed over to the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Sea Fisheries.
