20 days to premier cycling event - Africa Cup in Nelson Mandela Bay

Port Elizabeth - Friday marks 20 days to the Africa Cup. The 4-day cycling event will see 20 African nations competing in races in Nelson Mandela Bay that will offer UCI points towards qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The event is part of a three-year partnership between Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Cycling South Africa.

Locations for the four days of racing includes, Marine Drive, New Brighton, Lorraine Primary School and Park Drive and the CBD area.

The races will be passing various attractions in Nelson Mandela Bay that visitors can look forward to. The Donkin Heritage Trail, 7 Castle Hill Museum, Donkin Reserve and Pyramid and Route 67 are just some of the attractions.

The Donkin Heritage Trail is a 5km trail which links 51 places of historical interest in the old Hill area of central Port Elizabeth. 7 Castle Hill Museum is one of the oldest surviving Settler cottages in Port Elizabeth.

The Donkin Reserve includes a stone pyramid monument with a touching inscription erected by Sir Rufane Donkin in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth, after whom the city was named, as well as palm-lined walkways and benches. The Lighthouse, which was built in 1861, also houses Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, the official Visitor Information Centre.

Route 67 consists of 67 Public Art Works symbolising Nelson Mandela's 67 years of work dedicated to the Freedom of South Africa and includes 67 steps leading up the second largest flag in Africa.

These are just a few of the many attraction’s visitors can expect. The Nelson Mandela Bay Pass is a smartcard access card which provides free admission to 60 attractions and activities in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Day 1 – October 10, 2019 – Thursday – Mixed Relay – New Brighton
Day 2 – October 11, 2019 – Friday – Individual Time Trial – Marine Drive
Day 3 – October 12, 2019 – Saturday – Criterium Race – Lorraine Primary School
Day 4 – October 13, 2019 – Sunday – Road Races – St Georges Park/CBD
