20-year-old Dutywa man appears in court for raping his 82-year-old granny

The 20-year-old man accused of raping his 82-year-old grandmother on New Year's Day, at Ngonyama Locality, Nouri Village, Dutywa, briefly appeared before the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.

"He was not asked to plead. His case was remanded to the 25th January to allow for further investigations," said police spokesperson, Captain Manatha.

"The accused remained in custody.

"The accused cannot be named as he is related to the victim."

"It is alleged that the victim saw the suspect coming through the window and she recognised him as the suspect is her grandson," said Capt Manatha.

"The suspect allegedly accosted the granny and raped her. The case was registered at Dutywa Police Station."

He said that the suspect was swiftly traced and arrested.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemned the alleged rape of an elderly person especially as the suspect is her grandson, who was supposed to protect his granny.

He praised the Dutywa police for their swift action in arresting the suspect.
