20-year-old man jailed for eight years for raping 31-year-old woman

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced 20-year-old Sizwe Mafika to eight years behind bars for raping a 31-year-old woman.

"It is alleged that the two were going to a tarven on 08 May 2016, at about 16H30, at Mgomanzi Village, Butterworth," said police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manatha.

"The accused promised to buy liquor for the victim. As they were walking towards the tarven, the accused threatened the victim with a knife and accosted her. He then overpowered the victim and raped her."

Captain Manatha said that a case of rape was registered at Butterworth Police Station.

"Butterworth FCS Unit took over the investigation. The accused was traced and arrested," he added.

"The eight years imprisonment handed to the accused is welcomed by the Eastern Cape police, and we trust that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to criminals preying on women who are not in a position to defend themselves.

"Violence committed against women and children is in the forefront of our fight against crime and offenders can expect that our investigators will pursue every avenue to ensure their conviction."
