The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man, Tieho Toli Lethena, to undergo 20 years imprisonment for raping a 28-year-old woman.

"The accused was sentenced on Friday, at Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"It is alleged that the victim was from a tarven on 6 May 2017, at about 05:00, in the morning.

"The rape took place at Vonqo Locality, Maquthubeni Village, Dutywa."

The accused was armed with a knife and threatened the victim with the knife.

"He overpowered the victim and raped her," Captain Manatha said.

"A case of rape was registered at Dutywa Police Station."

The case was then handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

Lethena was later traced and arrested.

Butterworth SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the stiff sentence handed to the accused person.

He said that the sentence will serve as a deterrence to other future rapists.

He also warned tarven owners to stick to the opening and closing times to avoid the repeat of women being raped whilst from the tarvens.
