Two men, a 29-year-old taxi driver, and his 20-year-old conductor, were arrested after on Friday morning after apparently overloading the minibus taxi with 32 passengers.

This followed after New Brighton police, New Brighton street patrollers and Provincial Traffic officers conducted a special operation in Sheya Kulati Street, New Brighton.

"At 08:00, a white Quantum minibus taxi was stopped by the members, and they found 32 passengers (four adults and 28 children) in the taxi," said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"The 29-year-old driver was arrested for overloading."

He said that on wanting to move the vehicle to New Brighton police station, there was confusion created by the driver and the conductor of where the keys of the minibus was.

"After a search of them the keys were found hidden in the underpants of the conductor," Capt Beetge.

"He was then arrested for defeating the ends of justice."

Both will appear before the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie has warned that overloading of vehicles, taxis included, poses a severe danger to its passengers.

"Combined with the wet roads today, this taxi posed a threat to the lives of those passengers. Parents should educate their children not to get into taxis that are being overloaded," he added.
