2019 Rugby World Cup final: Springboks make history with triumph over England

Port Elizabeth - We did it! Springboks resoundingly beat England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final on Saturday - and over 50 million South Africans cheered them on to victory. The 2019 Rugby World Cup in itself was a historic tournament.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup was the ninth Rugby World Cup, the quadrennial rugby union world championship. The tournament was held in Japan from 20 September to 2 November. This was the first time the tournament took place in Asia and outside the traditional Tier 1 rugby nations.

By winning the Rugby World Cup, the Sprngboks became the first team ever to win a rugby world cup final after losing their opening match; and the Only team to win the Rugby Champs and World Cup in the same year.

For the duration of the match, there was little traffic on the usually busy weekend roads in Port Elizabeth. Seemingly many remained at home to watch the decider between England and South Africa.

Those that found themselves at the malls, suspended their shopping and crowded wherever there was a TV showing the England vs South Africa match.

Even in the supermarkets and shops, business was punctuated by cheers and screams each time the Boks scored as staff also did their best to cheer on the Boks while attending to customers.

The mood was pulpable.

"I have rarely seen South Africans so focussed on one thing," described one shopper, who identified himself as Aubrey.

"Whatever the final score, South Africa has been united behind the Boks."

A taxi conductor entertained passengers; "If South Africa wins, it's free taxi rides today -  we are just collecting enough for me and the driver, to join the celebrations later honoured passengers."

For many it was a remarkable moment of unity.

"I wish South Africans can unite on all matters like I am seeing today," said another shopper. She said she cannot wait for the Boks to land back in South Africa with the trophy.

Online the conversation was all about the rugby final.

On Twitter, #RWCFinal; #Springboks; #SiyaKolisi; #GoBokke; #RWC2019; #England and #WorldChampions were trending in that order.
